A Brazilian Sand Dune and its Amazing History

Last weekend we drove four hours to a place called Itaunas, a bucolic village with 500 inhabitants known for their amazing talent of dancing Forro (a traditional Brazilian music and a dancing style). During Brazilian Carnival, Itaunas hosts more than 300 thousand tourists that drive from all over the country to enjoy their deserted beaches and dancing.  

Between 1950 and 1970 the original village of Itaunas was completely covered with sand. After the deluge of sand only the tip the Village church remained visible. The area then became known as the Dunes of Itaunas. A new Itaunas Village was moved a few miles away.

Back at the Village of Itaunas, this huge and hollow tree trunk is one of the favorite attractions for the kids. We walked inside of it!

We can't wait to go back to Itaunas! The best of Brazil is hidden in (almost) undiscovered places like this!
